Parfois je pense que c’est à New York que je me sens vraiment chez moi. Parfois je me dis que je serai incapable d’y vivre, loin de ma famille et mes amis. Ce qui est sûr, c’est que dès l’instant où je la quitte, elle me manque.

Sometimes I think there’s only in New York that I feel home. Sometimes I think that I would never be able to live there, far from my family and friends. But what is sure is that as soon as I leave it, I miss it. 

C’est bientôt l’heure de rentrer à Paris et on a envie de se faire un vrai bon resto. Sur les conseils de copains de J, on va voir les cartes de quelques beaux resto sur Manhattan. Sauf qu’on entend parler français à tous les coins de rues. Ou espagnol ou italien. Mouais. Et puis on est pas venu à New-York pour manger de la soupe à l’oignon non plus. Nous, on veut manger New-Yorkais et être avec les New-Yorkais.

Et Là J me dit “Tu te souviens du restaurant devant lequel on est passé en se baladant à Dumbo?” Bah non, je ne m’en souviens pas. Mais bon, je lui fais confiance à mon J. On retourne donc à Brooklyn et là, en arrivant devant… effectivement je me souviens de ce joli restaurant au bord de L’East River. Le Bubby’s.
Bonus : tous les produits utilisés sont organiques (bio) et proviennent de petits agriculteurs de l’Etat de New-York. Exactement ce qu’on voulait ! Pour moi ce sera une citronnade maison parfumée à la framboise avec du poulet fermier, des haricots verts croquants et des frites de patates douces. Pour J, une bière américaine, des travers de porc et des onions rings. En dessert : ce sera milk-shake et pecan pie. Il parait que le Bubby’s est très connu pour ses tartes d’ailleurs.
Pourquoi vous allez noter cette adresse pour vos prochaines vacances à New-York?

1. Parce qu’il est dans un super beau quartier, Dumbo dont je parlais dans mon billet précédent.
2. Parce que aux States c’est OGM à gogo. Donc quand c’est spécifié Bio là bas, vous savez ce que vous avez dans l’assiette.
3. Parce que vous serez peut-être les seuls touristes (en tout cas pour l’instant) et que vous pourrez jouer à “vis ma vie d’américain”.
4. Parce que vos papilles n’en peuvent plus des fast-foods et réclament quelque chose de plus fin.
5. Parce que quand vous regarderez par la fenêtre, vous verrez les ponts et les buildings illuminés.
6. Parce qu’il y a une jolie libraire/concept store juste à côté pour faire des emplettes avant de manger.
7. Parce que derrière le bar, quand on va aux toilettes, il y a un photobooth à l’ancienne et que ça fera un super souvenir.
8. Parce que leurs citronnades bio maison sont à tomber.
9. Parce que ce n’est pas bondé. C’est un endroit idéal pour passer une soirée romantique en amoureux.
10. Parce que le service est génial et les serveurs adorable.

It’s almost time to say goodbye to the US and go back to Paris. J and I wanted to spend an evening in a good restaurant. We followed the advices of a some J’s buddies and looked at the menu of some beautiful restaurants in Manhattan. But we kept on hearing french people all around us. Or spanish or italian. Erm. And we didn’t come to NYC to eat onion soup either… We want to eat american and stay with americans. Then J said : Remember that restaurant we walked by in Dumbo?” Well no, I don’t ! But I do trust my sweet little J so we went back to Brooklyn and actually when we arrived, I did remember. This cute restaurant right beside the East River is called the Bubby’s. Bonus : All the food is organic and come from small farmers from NY state. It was just perfect ! I had some homemade raspberry lemonade, some chicken, green beans and sweet potatoes fries. J took an american beer, ribs and onion rings. What about dessert? Milk-Shake and pecan pie ! I heard the Bubby’s is well known for its pies by the way! So what should you put that address on your “to go” list for your next NYC vacations? 1. Because it’s in Dumbo (I told you yesterday about it). 2. Because it’s all organic and God knows what that means in the US. You know what you eat ! 3. Because you might be the only tourists there which is nice. 4. Because you cannot stand junk foods anymore and you need something GOOD. 5. Because when you’ll look through the windows, you’ll see the Manhattan bridge and all the buildings illuminated. 6. Because there’s a nice book/concept store on the right and you can buy a few stuff before dinner. 7. Because behind the bar, on the way to the toilets, there’s an old photobooth and it’d be a great memory. 8. Because their homemade lemonades are to die for ! 9. Because it’s not crowded. It’s the perfect place to spend a romantic diner with your love. 10. Because the service is great and the servers lovely.

D.U.M.B.O n’est pas un pauvre petit éléphant aux grandes oreilles. (Disney. Again. J’ai toujours trouvé ce dessin animé triste, non?!) D.U.M.B.O, c’est l’abréviation de “Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass” et c’est aussi un de mes quartiers chouchou de Brooklyn. J’adore la vue là bas sur l’East River et les buildings de Manhattan. On peut voir la beauté de New-York tout en étant à l’abris du bourdonnement de la foule. (Accro de Gossip Girl? Tu en as déjà vu des bouts. Mais siiii, c’est le quartier des Humphrey. Tu sais les pauvres Humphrey proprio d’un sublime loft).
Oui, parce que là bas on trouve plein de lofts moins cher qu’à Manhattan puisque que c’est un ancien quartier industriel entièrement rénové. On y trouve la population la plus branchée de New-York, des concepts stores et autre boutiques de design, la célèbre pizzeria Grimaldi (fréquentée par certains acteurs de New York Police Judiciaire. Le vrai little Italy est à Brooklyn) etc… et puis un Starbucks comme des milliers d’autres mais que mine de rien on a adoré. On a passé du temps hein au Starbucks. Parce qu’aux States le wifi y est gratuit, on en profitait un max. Et pour ma boisson qu’on ne trouve pas ici. Un thé glacé au fruit de la passion et à la limonade.

Dumbo isn’t a poor little elephant with big ears. (Disney. Again. I always thought that movie was so sad, wasn’t it?!) Dumbo is also the abbreviation for “Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass” and it’s also one of my fave area of Brookly. I love the view there on the East River and Manhattan’s buildings. You can see the beauty of New-York without being bothered by the hum of the crowd. (Addicted to Gossip Girl? You already saw some pieces of Dumbo. Yes you have ! It’s where the Humphrey used to live. You know the poor Humprey who own a beautiful loft !) Because there are lots of lofts there, cheaper than in Manhattan because it’s an old industrial area fully renovated. You can find there the most fashionable and hype population of New-York, concept stores and other design stores, the famous Grimaldi Pizzeria (some Law and Orders actors go there. The real Little Italy is in Brooklyn), etc… And some Starbucks Coffee, just like any other Starbucks but we loved spending time there. And hell we did because over there in the US, they have free wifi and we enjoyed it a lot. But also for my drink that we can’t find in french starbucks : the passion iced tea lemonade.

C’est quoi ce phare perdu et sorti de nul part devant le pont de Brooklyn? Drôle, non? Sur le coup, ça m’a fait penser au phare de Peter et Elliott. Oui, j’ai souvent des références Disney.
En fait c’est une boutique de glaces. Cornet ou pas, Milk Shake, Banana Split, au choix. Il faisait trop froid ce jour là, donc pas de glaces pour nous mais c’est une adresse à retenir. Faut dire que J est un peu friand de glaces (comme de bonbons ou de fast-foods, que des choses hyper diététique quoi).
Je n’ai pas pu m’empêcher de faire un tour à l’intérieur pour voir à quoi ça ressemblait et j’ai eu un coup de coeur pour les cornets rouge et bleu façon american flag. La prochaine fois qu’on y retourne, il fera chaud, ok?

What is that lighthouse lost and out of nowhere, in front of the Brooklyn Bridge? Funny, right? When I saw it, it made me think of Peter and Elliott’s lighthouse. Yes, I often have Disney references. Actually, it’s a ice cream store ! Cones or cup, Milk Shake, Banana Split, your choice. It was too cold that day, so no ice creams for us, but I thought it was a nice address to keep in mind. I must say that J is fond of ice creams (just as much as candies or junk food. Only diet stuff of course). I couldn’t help myself but go inside and see what it was like and I feel in love with the red and blue US flag cones ! Next time we go, it’s gonna be hot, alright?

Retour rapide. Le lendemain d’Halloween.
On a vraiment passé plus de temps à Brooklyn cette fois. Et on a continué à découvrir des tas d’endroits. Hormis Bedford Street, Williamsburg et Taffee Place (de plus en plus bobo).
Je pourrais vous parler du quartier de Williamsburg, ultra tendance et en pleine rénovation au bord de l’East River. ça va être sublime, je vous raconte pas les lofts de rêve qui seront à vendre ou à louer !  Je pourrais aussi vous parler de Greenpoint, un quartier pavillonnaire adorable peuplé de Polonais, de la vue magnifique depuis Brooklyn Heights, de mon quartier chouchou : Dumbo et de son starbucks et du magasin West Elm où j’ai fait quelques emplettes. Mais mieux vaut des images non?

Rewind. Back to the day after Halloween. We really spent more time in Brooklyn this time. And we kept on discovering lots of places. I mean beside Bedford Street, Williamsburg and Taffee Place. I could tell you about Williamsburg actually which is so trendy and still under renovation beside the East River. It’s gonna be marvellous and I’m not even talking about all the dreamy loft that will be for rent or sale ! I could also tell you about Greenpoint, that lovely residential area populated by Polish people, about that amazing view from Brooklyn Heights or about my fave area : Dumbo and its starbucks and its West Elm store where I shopped some great stuff… But images are better than words right?

J’aurais pu vous faire le coup du Best Bagel Ever après le Best Burger Ever. Parce que franchement c’est un peu ça. Si vous êtes à la recherche d’un très bon bagel à New-York, je vous conseille vivement Bergen Bagels. Un cran au-dessus de The Bagel Store dont je vous parlais l’année dernière.

Le hasard fait bien les choses puisqu’on ne connaissait pas du tout cette adresse. C’est au bout de 2h et demi d’errance dans L’Ouest de Brooklyn et avec deux estomacs qui criaient famine qu’on a atterri là bas. La devanture ne paie pas de mine mais ne vous y fiez pas. On y trouve 22 sortes de cream cheese (sucré ou salé), des tas d’ingrédients et de salades différents, etc. Pour une petite dizaine de dollar on a droit au combo : bagel, chips, coleslaw et boisson. Mon choix : #8, un bagel à la dinde, bacon, tomates et russian dressing. So good ! Sorry pour les photos floues, j’avais juste envie de finir mon bagel !

I could have told you about the best bagel ever after the best burger ever. Because, well… it is ! If you’re in NYC and looking for a very good bagel… My advice : go to Bergen Bagel. It’s better than The Bagel Store I was talking about last year. As chance would have it, we didn’t know that address at all. We were walking for 2 hours and a half and were starving when we got there. The storefront isn’t very impressive but don’t trust it. You can find 22 kinds of cream cheese there (sweet or salty), lots of different ingredients and salads, etc. For not even  10 dollars you get the combo : bagel, chips, coleslaw and a drink. My choice : #8, a turkey bagel with bacon, tomatoes and russian dressing. So good ! Sorry for blurry photos, I just wanted to finish my bagel !

Nous étions donc à Brooklyn (dans Williamsburg plus précisement) à la recherche du Bagel Store de Bedford Avenue. Parce que quand on a une envie de bagels à New-York, c’est trop facile de se faire plaisir. Alors autant le faire en découvrant ce joli quartier bobo de Brooklyn. Là-bas, c’est beau et typique non? Authentique même je dirais. J’adore l’ambiance. On a presque l’impression que l’on va tomber sur Dan Humphrey (GG saison 1) ou que l’on va être servi par Vanessa.

A “The Bagel Store” on a droit aux “Best Old Fashioned Hand Rolled Bagels”. Il y a autant de choix pour le pain que pour le contenu. On est servi rapidement et avec le sourire. Au menu pour nous donc : bagel garlic/cream cheese et un bacon/cheddar que l’on a mangé un peu plus loin sur un banc en bois contre un arbre en admirant la rue. Comment est-ce qu’on appelle ça de nouveau? Ah oui. Un moment de pur bonheur.

So we were in Brooklyn (Williamsburg to be precise) looking for The Bagel Store on Bedford Avenue. Because when you really want a bagel in New-York, it’s so easy to make this pleasure real ! We thought we could have it there in this beautiful & cool area . It’s so typical there and nice, don’t  you think so? I’d even say genuine. I love the atmosphere. You almost feel like you will bump into Dan Humphrey (GG season 1) or that Vanessa is gonna be your waitress.

At The Bagel Store,  you’ve got the “Best Old Fashioned Hand Rolled Bagels”. Yummy. There’s a big choice of breads and ingredients. You are quickly served and with a smile. How is that? On the menu for us : a garlic&cream cheese bagel, and a bacon & cheddar one that we ate a little further on a wooden banch beside a tree, watching the street. What do you call that again? Oh yeah. A moment of pure happiness.

After a wonderful trip in Louisiana, we’re back in NYC our love town. We were looking for a (super good) bagel that my mate Magali told me about, so we walked around Williamsburg, Brooklyn. We admired the place, the buildings with red bricks, the tags with still that feeling of being in movie…

Pour notre dernier jour, S a voulu nous refaire ce petit plaisir, alors pendant qu’on se préparait, Maguy est allée acheter de quoi les cuisiner puis S s’est mis derrière les fourneaux. Une fois encore, c’était délicieux même si j’ai fait une overdose de sucre, moi qui ne suis généralement pas très “sucré”. Avant de partir pour l’aéroport, J insiste pour aller à l’épicerie du coin prendre quelques cochonneries (surtout des Oréos) puis nous tentons de tout faire rentrer dans nos valises. Nous sommes venus avec 2, nous repartons avec 3 bagages. Merci Macy’s d’avoir fait une promo (-50% sur toutes les valises) la veille, ça tombait à pique.

Quelques petites photos avant de prendre la route et puis nous partons pour JFK. Le chemin est un peu long, l’avion décolle avec 1h de retard, mais nous arrivons à l’heure à Paris. Ni moi, ni J n’avons réussi à dormir cette nuit (en ce qui me concerne, c’est en parti à cause du mec (un français) devant moi qui a baissé son siège au maximum – enfin jusqu’à sentir mes genoux enfoncés dans son dos) et la femme (une américaine) à côté de moi qui ne comprenait pas comment ouvrir la tablette (malgré la flèche) ni comment éteindre son écran (c’est écrit On/OFF dessus, en anglais en plus)) Du coup, le retour est encore plus dur -et le rer que l’on attends pendant une demi heure- Mais je suis quand même contente de retrouver mon lit

Paris (Can you see the Eiffel Tower?)

Yes, it took me ages, but here’s the last day of our trip. (I had to recover from the end of the vacation). Last year, on a sunday morning, S cooked us some pancakes. It was the first time that I tasted pancakes. Of course it’s not light or diet. The pancakes fried and drowned in the sugar and butter sirup… But it’s yummy

For our last day in New-York, S wanted to cook some for us again as he knew it would please us. While we were getting ready, Maguy shopped and then S cooked them. Once more, it was delicious, even if i had a little sugar overdose as I’m not usually a sugar person. Before leaving for the airport, J insisted to go to the grocery and buy food, mostly Oreos, and then we had to make it all fit in our luggages. We came with 2 and left with 3. Thanks to the Macy’s for making a sales day (-50% on every luggages) the day before, just when we needed it!

We took a few pictures together before leaving and went to JFK. It took us a while to reach the airport and the plane was one hour delayed but we arrived on time in Paris. Neither J, nor me managed to sleep during the flight. As for me it was mostly because of the french guy in front of me who lowed his armchair to the maximum, until he could feel my knees in his back, and the american woman beside me who didn’t know how to open her little table (despite the arrow on it) and how to turn off her screen (it was written ON/OFF in english).. So the trip back was even harder (and the metro once in Paris that we waited for 30 minutes) But I was glad to find my bed back though New York we miss you already.
