Il y a des moments comme ça où on débarque devant une maison à la Nouvelle Orléans à des milliers de km de chez soi  pour une fête privée. Et où un grand mec de la sécurité coche ton nom sur sa liste des invités. Oui parce que ton nom y est.

Où tu passes une journée à écouter les artistes (dont Paul Sanchez et John Boutté) et à manger avec eux des écrevisses et de la jambalaya à volonté. Où t’achètes plein de tickets de tombola dans l’espoir de gagner le séjour à Disneyworld en Floride (que tu gagnes pas… on peut pas tout avoir hein), où tu découvres les “jello shot” de la gelée fluo à la vodka qu’il faut avaler d’un coup, et où tu parles avec un tas de gens adorables (Nathan, Mrs Ohio, Jesus, Steve…) qui ne te connaissent ni d’Eve ni d’Adam mais t’accueilles les bras grand ouverts.

Il y a des moments où tu as envie de soutenir une cause, surtout quand tu as passé une journée extraordinaire et tu achètes les albums des artistes que tu as écouté toute la journée.

There are times in your life where everything goes perfectly well at the good moment. Like flying to New Orleans when the Jazz Fest is on. Or staying at your cousin when he just accepted to cook a huge jambalaya for a charity day (The Thread Head Party 2009) for musicians without label.

IThere are times in your life when you go to a house in New Orleans, thousands miles away from your home for a private party. Where a big security guy checks your name on his guest list. Yes because your name is written down there.

When you spend a whole day listening to some great artists like Paul Sanchez and John Boutté, eating crawfish and jambalaya for free with them. When you buy lots of lottery tickets hoping to win the Disneyworld trip in Florida (well you don’t win it but you can’t have everything, right?), when you discover the Jello shot, that fluorescent jelly with vodka inside that you have to swallow ine one shot, when you talk to adorable people (Nathan, Mrs Ohio, Jesus, Steve…) who doesn’t know you but welcomes you with open arms.

There are times in your life when you want to support a charity, especially when you’ve spent an amazing day and when you buy all those artists’ album you’ve been listening to all day long.

Idéal pour vous fondre dans la peau de l’américain moyen et de faire vos courses à des prix réellement dérisoires. Les plus grande qualités du Wal*Mart sont sa taille et sa profusion de produits, de choix. On y trouve vraiment de tout, et puis surtout plein de choses inconnues de nos supermarchés français. Des étagères entièrement fournies de Zatarain, un rayon dédié aux sauces barbecues, des barils de lait, des cupcakes fluos et des gâteaux d’anniversaire glacé de cream cheese coloré qu’on ne voit que dans les films Disney des dimanches après-midi avant Noël. Le Wal*Mart, c’est un peu notre Mecque à J et moi.

If you ever go the USA, there’s a must-go : the Wal*Mart.

Ideal to feel american and to shop cheap. The biggest qualities of Wal*Mart are no doubt its size (huge) and the abundance of products and choice. You can find whatever you’re looking for and stuff that you will never find over here in french supermarket. There are shelves of Zatarain food, a corner only for bbq sauces, gallons of milk, fluorescent cupcakes and birthday cakes covered by philadelphia cream cheese that you can only see in Walt Disney’s movies on sundays afternoon before Christmas. The Wal*Mart is kinda our La Mekke to J and I.

In NOLA, there are two big events along the year that makes tourists come. First Mardi Gras with all the beautiful chars, the beers, the girls who shows their boobs on Bourbon street to get mardi gras’ necklaces.  And then, there’s Jazz Fest. A huge music festival just at the doors of the city where you can meet all kind of people : old hippies,  beach surfers, people like you and I… All of them have a common point, they all are crazy about music and wanna have a good time. Well, OK they do have another thing in common : a portable chair, the thing we missed, us little frenchies when we couldn’t seat, without cap either under 35°c (95°F). On the menu : gospel, jazz, blues, rap, country music, rock n’roll, cajun music, mardi gras indians music (which was a real discovery to me) and native american music. Enough for everyone’s taste. And talking about taste, a party like this without food wouldn’t of course be possible. That’s why all the stands offered lots of good (and not so good) things like muffuletta, crawfish, jambalaya, po-boy, Joyce’s homemade lemonade… All the specialities of Louisiana state (including a Zatarain corner when was working R and where you could graciously eat a crawfish boil) and so many more things like pork’s fried skin ! Every year, there are some big stars coming (this year there were Joe Cocker and Neil Young for example) but also some unknown band (to us) like “Fait Dodo”, an amazing Cajun band with a 71 years-old singer that moved better than Elvis !

Avant ça, mon cousin R qui travaille pour Zatarain nous emmène avec ses collègues préparer un crawfish boil (littéralement des écrevisses bouillies. En gros c’est une grande bouillabaisse avec des tonnes d’écrevisses, des pommes de terres, des épis de maïs, des champignons et des épices que l’on trouve chez Zatarain par exemple) qu’ils distribueront à leur stand lors du festival.

En fait, J et moi avions le choix. Sois on dormait tranquillement jusqu’à 9h et prenions le pick up pour aller de nous même au festival, soit on se levait aux aurores pour accompagner R. Solution qu’on a choisi au départ parce qu’on avait la trouille de conduire l’énorme pick up. Mais nous n’avons pas regretté un seul instant notre choix, car qui peut se vanter d’avoir vu préparer un crawfish boil (une des spécialités cajun de l’état)  avec l’équipe Zatarain et d’avoir pu y gouter (c’est très épicé) à 7h du matin accompagné d’une petite bière?
